Rajinikanth to play superstar in ‘Kuchelan’

CHENNAI: Films with friendship as the central theme are not new to actor Rajinikanth.
From ‘Annamalai’ to ‘Thalapathi,’ many of his earlier hits have highlighted friendship in interesting ways. Now, the actor will do one more for his mentor K.Balachander’s production company Kavithalaya. The film, tentatively titled, ‘Kuchelan,’ is to be produced by Kavithalaya and Sevan Arts in Tamil and in Telugu by Awani Dutt of Vyjanthi Movies. The story is based on the Malayalam hit ‘Katha Paryumbol,’ which was released in December.

It is the story of a friendship between a Superstar and a barber, played by actors Mamooty and Srinivasan respectively. In Tamil, the Super Star’s role would be played by Rajinikanth and barber’s role by actor Pasupathi. Director P.Vasu who did the remake of ‘Manichirathazu’ as ‘Chandramukhi’ will direct the film.

Mr. Vasu saw the Malayalam film on December 31. “Later I requested Rajinikanth to see it. He was literally floored by the film and wanted to do it in Tamil. We were looking at casting Meena as the female lead. We have closed in on Simran who missed the role in ‘Chandramukhi.’ We will start shooting the film in February and release it in June, 2008.”

Director K.Balachander said he has produced and directed eight films with Rajinikanth and ‘Kuchelan’ will be the 9th production.
